Identifying your unique values and priorities will empower you to make a more mindful job transition.
From a neuroscience perspective, our values directly relate to how we perceive, decide and act. We each experience a greater sense of fulfilment when we live in accordance with them.
Executive centres in our brain activate when we are living aligned to what matters most to us. This serves us to make clearer decisions, and have more focused attention which in turn leads to greater momentum in our actions.
Over the last few years an increasing number of career executives have been informing me that their job search opens up very real ethical explorations for them personally and professionally.
When we work in an organisation that is not aligned with our values creates a lot of stress in our system. Over time this can dilute our personal power and vitality.
Engaging in attentive inquiry to discover your values will save you a lot of time in your job search, as it will prevent you from applying for opportunities that aren’t right for you, and which may otherwise cause us you a lot of unhappiness down the line.
It is important that you pursue roles that are aligned with your soul. To do that you need to have clarity on who you are, what your values are, and the career direction which Source/Universe/Divine/Life is calling you to serve.
How closely you live in accord with your values directly impacts our destiny, self-esteem, health, and relationships. There is real cost if you avoid the inner work necessary to consciously identify and align with your values.
In addition to identifying your values, it is important to identify your personal priorities to support your decision making process. These include your life responsibilities, family commitments, location, financial situation, and so forth.
Once you are aware of your unique values and priorities, you may then choose to make conscious commitments to live true to them as mindfully as you can in your daily life.
Doing so nourishes your essence, which calls each of us towards present moment living with ever growing congruency.
The third step is to engage in daily self-evaluation in a way that serves to keep you aligned and accountable for how you are thinking, feeling and acting in accordance with your values.
“Begin each day with the blueprint of my deepest values FIRMLY in mind then when challenges come, make decisions BASED on those values.” Stephen R. Covey (2016.)
A helpful habit to embed into your job search is to consistently ask yourself: is this option aligned with my values and priorities?
I encourage you to include a regular reflective practice into your day to help you make better choices and decisions. Many of my clients like to write down their values and place them next to a laptop, fridge, bathroom mirror, or somewhere else where we can see them every day. Wishing you all the very best with your job search, I’m rooting for you and wishing you every success!
